The Colleton County High School varsity boys basketball team is off to a 2-0 start in Region VII-AAAA after earning wins over Beaufort High School (86-75) and Bluffton (56-53) last week. The Cougars are currently 9-8 overall. To remain undefeated in the region, Colleton County will need to get past Hilton Head, who is also 2-0 in conference play, on Friday Jan. 24 on the road.
Against Beaufort High on Tuesday Jan. 14 on the road, Alex Sherrill scored 33 points to lead the Cougars to victory in the conference opener. Stephan Gadson chipped in 23 points and Silas Holmes scored 10 points. Other scoring included Jermaine Parker 8, Antwan Griffin 4, Alston Sherrill 3 and Adam Buckner 1.
Odom and Phares each scored 16 points to lead the Eagles. Other scoring included Rivers 14, Riley 12, Holmes 11 and Vanhise 5.

Gadson led the way for Colleton County in the home win over Bluffton on Friday Jan. 17. Other scoring included Silas Holmes 13, Alex Sherrill 11, Jahlil Ellison 6, Parker 6, Temaj Butler 4 and Griffin 1.
Bluffton was led by Rice with 14 points and Kirkland with 12 points. Other scoring included Eastham 10, Chance 6, Simmons 6, and Mosley 5.
“It was a big week for us with our first two conference games,” said Coach Matthew Mullins. “I was proud of how we handled the preparation and how we played on game day. Against Beaufort, Alex and Stephan both stayed hot, but it was the overall team contribution that put us over the top in both games.
“Silas Holmes stepped up big off the bench in both games for us and made some big plays,” said Mullins. “He hit a couple of big 3’s in the Bluffton game that helped us pull it out. He’s been more aggressive lately and it’s been great for us. This coming week will be challenging, but we look forward to weeks like this. We will face a very good Ashley Ridge team Tuesday and then Hilton Head Friday.”
