The Colleton County varsity football team came out flat against James Island Friday Oct. 9 on the road and trailed 21-0 at the end of the first half.
The Cougars sparked in the third quarter and trailed 21-13 with 1:05 left in the quarter. However, James Island answered with 7:11 left in the game, taking a 28-13 lead for the final scoring of the evening.
Colleton County had 74 passing yards and 152 rushing yards in the game and held James Island to 193 total yards.
Nayrone Holmes was 5-12 in passing for 74 yards and a touchdown and rushed 20 times for 41 yards. Jackie White rushed 19 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. Trey Magwood rushed twice for 15 yards.
“Turnovers and self-inflicted errors were costly for us,” said Coach Coby Peeler. “The defense kept us in the game, but offensively, we have to be more consistent and help them out. We are going to get back to fundamentals and focus on cleaning up mistakes and being more physical.”
Colleton County (1-1) will host May River High School Friday Oct. 16 for Senior Night.
