The Colleton County Cougar Wrestling team participated in a tri-match that included Battery Creek and John Paul II Wednesday Jan. 29. In the tri-match, the Cougars earned a 36-18 win over John Paul II but suffered a loss against Battery Creek. Fernando Leyva (285) and Terrence Calloway (120) were the only wins against the Dolphins.
“The score didn’t show it, but there were a lot of competitive matches,” said Coach Jacques Glover. “I came away really pleased with the way the team competed, not being at full strength.”
Earlier in January, the Cougars lost to the Hilton Head Seahawks 73-3 with the only win coming from Austin Barnett (9-5) in the first match of the day.
“Austin Barnett came away with a very impressive region win in the third match,” said Glover. “Once Austin took control of the lead, he never looked back. Ethan Beach tried to capitalize on the momentum but ended up losing 7-6. From there on out, most of the matches went in Hilton Head’s favor. The team wrestled hard and showed the best is still yet to come.”
Colleton County fell 66-9 against Beaufort High School January 22 with the only wins coming from Terrance Calloway and Generius Brown. “We were down six weight classes but had a lot of first-year wrestlers’ stepped into starting spots to fill in for the missing bodies,” said Glover.
The Cougar wrestling team was scheduled to begin participation in the SCHSL Playoffs beginning February 8.
