Cougar Softball goes 2-3 in Palmetto Invitational

The Colleton County Lady Cougar Softball participated in the Palmetto Invitational 2021 held Friday and Saturday April 9-10 at Wescott Park in North Charleston. 

The Lady Cougars won their four-team pool bracket including Ashley Ridge, Berkeley and Hanahan, then went on to face Stratford High School and Summerville High School in gold bracket play. 

In game one, the Lady Cougars defeated Berkeley High School 4-2. Whitley Weathers allowed one earned run on six hits, striking out three in five innings. Shandi Brown, Sidney Howard and Makayla Chisolm had multiple hits in the game. 

Facing Ashley Ridge for game two of pool play, the Lady Cougars won 3-2. Weathers allowed no earned runs and struck out nine in the game. Jordan Slocum went 3-3 in the game and scored once. Chisolm was 2-2 with an RBI and scored once. Shamorie Overton was 1-2 with 2-RBI’s. 

Against Hanahan, the Lady Cougars fell 5-3. Weathers took the loss across seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out five in the game. Brown led the offensive effort, going 2-4 with an RBI and scoring once. Slocum, Weathers, and Bailey Cox each had a hit in the game. 

The Lady Cougars fell to Stratford High School 6-5 in game one of gold bracket play. Weathers took the loss, allowing six runs across seven innings, striking out seven. Brown was 3-4 with 2-RBI’s and scored twice. Weathers and Chisolm were also 3-4 in the game. 

Cox, Slocum, and Overton recorded a hit each in the game.

In the consolation game against Summerville High School, Colleton County lost 6-0. Sidney Howard earned the start and allowed six runs on four hits and issued four walks in two innings of work. Weathers closed the game, allowing one hit and striking out five. Chisolm had the only hit in the contest. 

The Lady Cougars had Region VII-AAAA games against Bluffton High School postponed last week due to COVID-19 protocol by the visiting team. Those games will be rescheduled at a later date. 

Colleton County was scheduled to travel to Oceanside on Tuesday, April 13 for a non-region contest before beginning the two-game series against Region VII-AAAA foe Beaufort High School on Monday, April 19 (away) and Wednesday, April 21 (home).
