The Colleton County varsity baseball team dropped their Region VII-AAAA opener against James Island High School last week. The Cougars fell 11-1 and 14-2 in the two-game series. The Cougars are 0-2 overall in the regular season and in Region VII.

In game one against James Island on March 7, the Cougars fell behind early and couldn’t come back. Gabe Wolfe was on the hill for Colleton County, lasting two innings, allowing six hits and seven runs while striking out one. Cohen Crosby and JC Poe entered the game as relief, both throwing two innings.

Grayson Cromer and Bruce Carpenter each collected one hit to lead Colleton County’s offensive efforts.

No individual stats were available for the second game versus James Island played March 9 on the road.

“James Island was the better team in this series,” said Coach Jermale Paige. “They outperformed us in every aspect of the game. We did not play our best baseball in these two games. If we did, then the games would have been closer, and things might have ended up differently. James Island was just a flat-out good team. We need to bounce back in our upcoming region series against Lucy Beckham.”

The Cougars game versus Hanahan High School scheduled for Friday, March 11 was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. Colleton County was scheduled to travel to Lucy Beckham on March 14 before bringing the series home Wednesday evening.
