A 62-year-old Cottageville man died from injuries received when his 2001 Yukon collided with a frontend loader in the 11700 block of Round O Road on Monday evening just after dark.
The Yukon received heavy damage in the crash. The accident was reported at 5:57 p.m. The S.C. Highway Patrol said both vehicles were traveling east when the Yukon ran into the back of the frontend loader.
Bystanders found the man unresponsive and began performing CPR in the roadway. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later and continued the resuscitative efforts. The man was transported to Colleton Medical Center by ambulance with additional firefighter-paramedics on board to assist with his care. The Emergency Department staff continued efforts to revive the man, but Phillip Craig Sapp, 62, of Cottageville died of multiple trauma, said Deputy Coroner Wayne Walker.
The driver of the frontend loader was also transported to Colleton Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. He was later released from the hospital.
Round O Road in the area of the accident was blocked for four hours until the accident could be cleared.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
