Cottageville Hwy MVC with entrapment and Air Evac

Posted

On Wednesday, Dec. 28, at approximately 6:46 p.m. a southbound Honda Accord left the roadway in a curve in the 2800 block of Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) north of Phillips Road. The vehicle rode the ditch, before striking a driveway culvert. The small car became airborne, then flipped over four times before coming to rest on its roof.

The unrestrained adult male driver was thrown into the back seat and suffered multiple traumatic injuries. He was trapped in the wreckage. Several bystanders, including a PA (Physician Assistant) from Colleton Medical Center Emergency Department, stopped to render aid.

Firefighter-Paramedics stabilized the car, then used Holmatro Pentheon Rescue Tools to rescue the man from the car. A medical helicopter was requested, and CARE Flight responded, landing in a field across from the accident. Once extricated, the man was treated at the scene, then flown in critical condition to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. Cottageville Highway in the area of the accident was blocked for two hours while the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
