Colleton Preparatory Academy receives federal funding

Colleton Preparatory Academy (CPA), a private school in Walterboro, has been given $531,182.42 in special funding from the S.C. Department of Education. The special funding will help them recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This funding to CPA is part of more than $15 million that went to 19 nonpublic schools in South Carolina, as part of the second round of allocations under the Emergency Assistance to Non-Public Schools (EANS) Program. “Congress appropriated EANS funding to states to ensure that children who attend private and parochial schools have access to the resources needed to rebound from the pandemic,” said State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman.

“The South Carolina Department of Education has administered these funds in coordination with the Governor’s Office and with the help and support of our non-public school partners know that they will be used to serve the best interests of students, families, and educators,” said Spearman, in a written statement.

According to CPA Head of School Jill Burttram, Colleton Prep will not be given any cash. Instead, the school will receive products. These products include cleaning supplies and protective barriers to protect students from the COVID-19 virus.

The funding will also be used to buy a new mobile unit for the school’s third-graders.

“The grant gives us two interventionists to work with struggling students, creates an after-school study hall and we will have professional development for our teachers,” said Burttram.

The school will also be receiving laptops and computer carts for several classrooms.

“Private schools hardly ever qualify for grant funding so we were surprised and delighted to learn we had qualified,” she said. “We have been so incredibly blessed with receiving these grants during Covid.”

CPA was eligible for the funding because the school met all of the Federal criteria, which includes the school being a non profit and having at least 20 percent of its enrolled students qualified as being from low-income families during the 2020-2021 school year.

CPA is the only private school in Colleton County to be selected.
