A 10-year-old girl was struck in the face when a gun went off inside her house in what authorities say was likely an accidental shooting.

The girl, whose identity is being withheld because she is a juvenile, received a gunshot wound to her face on Nov. 5th. The incident occurred inside a Chisolm Road residence at about 7:30 p.m.

According to information provided by Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials, they received a 911-call saying an adult in the house was attempting to unload a handgun when it went off. The bullet then struck the girl, who was in the house.

“Firefighter-Paramedics found the child in stable condition and the injury did not appear life-threatening,” said Barry McRoy, director of Colleton County Fire-Rescue.

According to McRoy, family members controlled the girl’s bleeding prior to the arrival of Fire-Rescue units. The girl was treated at the scene, and was then transported by ambulance to the Children’s Trauma Center at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting, as of press deadline.
