The latest meeting of the Colleton Genealogy Society was held on Saturday, April 12th at the Colleton County Memorial Library. The educational program for the meeting was presented by society president, Matthew Hiott, on the topic of “Identifying Old Photographs.” Tips were shared about how to look for clues in old photos that can help to date the image and possibly identify the people too. Several attendees brought old photographs from home to show.
Prior to the program, the society recognized two dedicated members of the organization who have been with the group since its formation in the early 1990s. Larry and Marsha Ulmer, married for sixty-three years, have served as officers in the genealogy society for over two decades, managing vital aspects for the group. Larry has simultaneously served as both the Treasurer and Webmaster, and Marsha has been the devoted newsletter editor. In addition, they are both engaged in many genealogical research projects and have created dozens of family history lineage books which are available to study at the Colleton Genealogy Society Research Center. The couple has lived in Columbia all these years, driving back and forth to attend meetings and events. Recently, they retired from their volunteer positions. Larry was born and raised in Colleton County (Ruffin), graduating from Bells High School, class of ‘58. He met Marsha in St Louis, Missouri while serving in the U.S. Army. They have 5 daughters and many grandchildren.
Volunteers of the Colleton Genealogy Society try to make sure the Research Center, located at 609 Black Street in Walterboro, is open to the public on Tuesday mornings as well as the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 10am until 2pm. Their website is at ColletonGenealogySociety.org and there is a group page on Facebook as well which gives information about upcoming events.
