Colleton County Fire Rescue was honored on March 12 at the 2022 South Carolina EMS Symposium by receiving the South Carolina EMS Network Large System of the Year award.

This was for the 2021 calendar year.

In a written statement, Fire Rescue Director Barry McCroy said, “We would like to thank our citizens, County Council, county administration, and community partners for all of their support. Most of all, a huge thank you to every one of our personnel, both volunteer and career. The professional manner and precision execution in which you carry out your craft is truly amazing. We are so humbled to be blessed with such great folks. This is truly your award.”

According to McRoy, Colleton County Fire-Rescue received letters of support from physicians in the county and from Colleton Medical Center. They also received letters of support from county administration.

The application for the local countywide rescue and firefighting service included information on Colleton County Fire-Rescue’s working with all major groups in the county and with county residents. This includes working with local Boy Scouts groups, Leadership Colleton and local physicians.

McRoy said CCFR’s working with The Blood Administration Project was a large part of their receiving the statewide award. This blood administration project changed the way paramedics deliver blood to people in need throughout South Carolina, he said.

“We piloted the field administration on ambulances and it is now an approved skill in South Carolina,” he said. “Once properly trained, state paramedics can perform blood transfusions.”
