Unfortunately, there have been a total of 68 deaths in Colleton County related to COVID-19.

“The emergence of the COVID-19 South African variant in South Carolina is concerning.  Although public health officials have determined the South African COVID-19 variant does not place a higher risk of severe illness or death on individuals, they have determined that it is much more transmissible.  We must redouble our efforts to protect ourselves and our community.  These efforts include wearing our masks, staying at least six feet apart from others, avoiding large crowds, washing our hands, getting tested often, and when we can, getting vaccinated.  These are the best protective actions we can take to limit the spread of the virus, whether it is the original strain, the South African variant, the United Kingdom variant, or other variants,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief, Dr. David Greene.

Colleton County residents are urged to follow the guidance of Governor McMaster and the recommendations of the CDC. This information can be accessed at colletoncounty.org/coronavirus.

Colleton County continues to follow the guidance issued by DHEC for the Phase 1A (frontline healthcare workers) vaccination rollout. Phase 1B will begin in the coming weeks. More information can be found by following the link https://scdhec.gov/covid19/covid-19-vaccine.

Walgreens in Walterboro is also offering vaccinations for Phase 1a.  More information can be ound by following the link www.walgreens.com/covid19vac.
