Colleton County Community Read

For The Press and Standard

This April, the Colleton County Memorial Library will be teaming up with area elementary schools, homeschoolers, preschool programs, and other educators to host the second Colleton County Community Read. As many may remember, the Colleton County Community Read began last year as a collaboration between the children's librarian, Ms. Shiela Keaise, and the Colleton County school district. The premise is simple- on one day, April 28th 2023, all elementary and preschool classrooms in Colleton County will be visited by community volunteers who will read a preselected story to the students. Children will also receive a copy of that book for their home libraries. It is a wonderful opportunity to emphasize the importance of literacy in our schools, homes, and community. The titles selected for this year include Go Away, Big Green Monster, The Gruffalo, Pickin' Peas, I am Enough, Molly Bannaky, and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. This program is possible due to a generous grant from the Save the Children organization.

If you would like to volunteer to be a reader on April 28th, you can sign up through a Google form available on the library's website, or by calling Kristen McClellan at 843-549-5621. Volunteers can choose the story and school they would like to visit.
