Civitans Hold their May Meeting

Posted

The Walterboro Civitan Club held its May 25th meeting at Dukes Barbecue. The meeting was called to order by the ringing of the bell by Civitan President, Paul M. Capers.

John Tully, the Vice President of Operations, from Colleton Medical Center came to speak to the group about the hospital and updates, renovations, and additional services that are coming to the facility. Tully also presented statistics about the facility that is one of the largest employers in Colleton County and contributes 42.7 million dollars annually to the local economy.

The Civitans also assisted the Board of Disabilities with a van purchase. Sheryl Gray, Director of the Board, reported that board was in need of a new transport van for the many people that depend on them for transportation. It had to be handicapped acceptable because of the nature of some of the people that they serve. The Walterboro Civitan Club was honored to make a substantial donation to help with the purchase of the van. Recently she, Sheryl, brought the van so that the club could see what we assisted them in purchasing.

With more than 30,000 members worldwide, Civitan International is a global organization dedicated to serving the local communities of its members. Using the structure of building local clubs, Civitan equips its members to address local needs with local solutions.

Civitan is the only service organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This long-standing focus began as a local project in Baltimore in the 1940s when Civitan began funding specialized teachers in schools. In 1956, Civitan membership unanimously adopted service to I/DD as the major project focus of the international organization. Today, Civitan supports the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Alabama where more than 100 researchers work on diseases that impact the lives of 1 in 6 people worldwide.
