Civil Air Patrol offers virtual academy

Posted

One of the challenges all Civil Air Patrol squadrons face during COVID-19 is finding a way to keep cadets motivated and making progress in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. The ACE Basin Composite Squadron is excited to announce that four cadets have earned the Wright Brothers Achievement Award, earning the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant.
One of Civil Air Patrol’s missions is to develop tomorrow’s leaders through the Cadet Program, which focuses on students age 12-21. To that end, the local Civil Air Patrol squadron, the ACE Basin Composite Squadron based in Walterboro, will host a Virtual Red Ribbon Leadership Academy on August 12 from 1-4 p.m. This free leadership academy will teach middle-school-aged students (those who have finished 5th-8th grade) about styles of leadership, how to develop their own style of leadership, and what it means to be a servant leader. The academy is taught by cadets in the ACE Basin Squadron ages 14-18.
This Red Ribbon Leadership Academy is usually taught in schools, in person, but due to the restrictions surrounding the spread of COVID-19, the academy is offered virtually this year. To register,, students can complete the Google form here: https://forms.gle/mkhsVVt4EHKXiEC76.
They will be contacted a few days prior to the academy to receive their Zoom link and password. Students who complete the academy will receive a certificate mailed to their home afterwards.
Although the ACE Basin Composite Squadron is currently meeting virtually, the emergency services training and preparation for community service continues. Those who are interested in joining the unit may email Capt. Rachael J. Mercer, unit commander, for information about how to visit the unit virtually at rachael.mercer@scwgcap.org.
