City changes zoning for new county offices

The City Council met on January 7 to amend the city zoning map and to discuss business pertaining to a bill introduced by the General Assembly of South Carolina.

The Walterboro zoning map was amended by the council on Tuesday night to change the classification of the land on Benson Street and Klein Street which will house new county offices from Highway Commercial District to Central Business District. These land parcels include the Harrelson Building, the present location of the Colleton County School District, site of the Old Jail (now county council chambers and probate) and other surrounding buildings.

City Council also passed a resolution in opposition to proposed South Carolina Bill H4431 which would dismantle the business license tax and allow the South Carolina Department of Revenue to control taxation on businesses in Walterboro. Council feels this would harm city revenue and remove the council’s authority to make decisions in meeting needs of local citizens and businesses.

Council also voted to accept the resignation of Andrew McConnell from the City Appearance Board.
