More than 130 Chamber members and guests gathered at the Edisto Beach Civic Center on Wednesday, June 19, to mark the end of an exciting fiscal year. The evening buzzed with lively conversations, delicious food, and refreshing drinks as the local business community celebrated together. Highlights of the night included honoring outstanding individuals for their community contributions and unveiling the Chamber’s new strategic plan. It was a night of celebration, recognition, and looking forward to a bright future.

Strategic Plan Presentation

This past year, the Chamber partnered with Young Strategies Inc. from Charlotte, NC, to develop an ambitious five-year strategic plan. Chamber Director Chelsea Harrison presented the process and results of a community stakeholder survey, which gathered insights from business owners, organization leaders, and elected officials.

The Chamber will set annual goals aligned with the plan’s initiatives, focusing on three key areas:

1) smart marketing of a coastal destination

2) enhancing the visitor experience

3) fostering a sustainable tourism economy.

Business of the Year Award

The Chamber celebrated APEX of Edisto Pest Management and its owner, Brad Drawdy, as the recipient of the 2024 Business of the Year Award. For nearly 30 years, APEX had been a cornerstone of the Edisto community, offering eco-friendly and effective pest control services. Brad Drawdy’s leadership extended beyond business excellence, as he actively supported local organizations by donating services to local organizations like the Edisto Art Guild and the Edisto Chamber, ensuring events were comfortable for attendees. Brad’s dedication to conservation and public safety was notable through his 14 years with the turtle patrol, including 8 years as Coordinator, and his 5 years as a volunteer firefighter, with 2 years on the Fire Board of Directors. His service to the Edisto Chamber of Commerce, including a previous term on the Board of Directors and a past Business of the Year award in 2013, showcased his ongoing enthusiasm and commitment. The Edisto Chamber of Commerce was proud to honor APEX of Edisto Pest Management and Brad Drawdy for his significant contributions to the community, demonstrating a genuine interest in the welfare and future of Edisto.

Martha Whetstone Service Award

The Edisto Chamber of Commerce proudly presented this year’s Martha Whetstone Service Award to Will Wright. A graduate of Wofford College, Will built a distinguished career in commercial and mortgage banking, serving as President of The Young Banker’s Division of the South Carolina Bankers Association and participating in Leadership South Carolina. His civic engagement included active membership in the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Charleston, along with board roles for the Charleston Area Mental Health Association and the MUSC Children’s Hospital. Since retiring in 2009 and settling in Edisto, Will significantly contributed to local organizations, including the Edisto Island Museum and the Edisto Chamber of Commerce. Will’s dedication to community service was perhaps best exemplified by his pivotal role in establishing the Edisto Island Community Clinic, which provides free dental and medical services to underserved residents. His active participation in Trinity Church, serving in various leadership roles, further demonstrated his commitment to his faith and community. Reverend Wey Camp of Trinity Church praised Will for his inspiring leadership and acts of kindness. The Martha Whetstone Award honored Will’s exceptional service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact, reflecting the very spirit of this prestigious recognition.

Volunteer of the Year Award

This year, the Chamber introduced the Volunteer of the Year Award to their lineup. Unlike their other awards, which were voted on or nominated by the Board, this award was chosen directly by the Chamber Director to honor the exceptional contributions of their volunteers. Volunteers play a crucial role, especially in organizations with limited budgets and staff, and Edisto is fortunate to have some of the best. The Chamber recognized the 2023-24 Chamber Volunteers of the Year: Bob and Stephanie Renner. Their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts significantly impacted the organization and community. Bob and Stephanie Renner are exceptional volunteers, reflecting their genuine commitment to the community’s success. At every event, they were there early to help set up and stayed late to ensure everything was taken care of. Their willingness to go above and beyond set a remarkable example for all. Bob and Stephanie epitomized the spirit of volunteerism, and the Chamber was incredibly grateful for their contributions.
