Cemetery history tour in Live Oak Cemetery Jan. 23

Local historian Elizabeth Laney will lead a walking tour of Live Oak Cemetery on Saturday Jan. 23.
The tour will highlight the gravesites and histories of Walterboro mayors, as well as several notable town councilmen and women. Tour will include the gravesites of Mayors H.H. Sweat, C.G. Henderson, J.K. Terry, Charles Witsell, John D. Black, among others, as well as the gravesites of the first woman elected to the town council and several of the town’s first African-American town councilmen who served during Reconstruction.
There will be one tour with a max capacity of 20 people. Start time is 3 p.m. The tour will start at the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary parking lot on Detreville Street by the big red rocking chair.
The tour, sponsored by the Colleton Museum & Farmers Market, is appropriate for 12-adults.
Closed-toed shoes and long pants recommended, as some areas of the cemetery might have long grass or storm debris. Hats and water might also be welcome. The tour will last just over an hour.
