CCHS Wins Thriller

Colleton High was clinging to a 19-12 lead late in the fourth quarter and needed a big play from their defense to secure the win. Jamael Washington provided that big play, intercepting a pass in the end zone with 32 seconds left in the game. This improved the team’s record to 1-3.

North Charleston scored first on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 6:16 left in the first quarter. The two point run failed, leaving the score 6-0.

The Cougars responded on their next possession, going 74 yards in 5 plays. Quarterback Mykeen Grant connected with Shaun Winfield for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 4:04 left in the first quarter. The point after the touchdown was no good, leaving the score tied at 6-6. That completed the scoring in the first half, with Colleton having a touchdown called back due to a penalty.

CCHS scored on their first possession in the second half on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Gant to Nick Williams, with 7:13 left in the third quarter. The point after the touchdown was good, making the score 13-7.

The Cougars then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off at North Charleston’s 14 yard line. It took the team two plays to score with Gant’s third touchdown of the night: a 14-yard strike to Darien Stephens. This left the score 19-6 with 6:03 left in the third quarter.

North Charleston recovered a Cougar fumble on a bad snap at the 46 yard line to set up their second touchdown of the night. The 25-yard touchdown pass made the score 19-12 with 2:54 left in the fourth quarter.

North Charleston got the ball back one last time to set up Washington’s big interception.

When the dust settled, Colleton County had 249 yards of total offense versus 210 yards for North Charleston.

CCHS quarterback, Gant, was 11-24 for 147 yards and three touchdowns. Dwight Gethers rushed 86 yards on 13 carries, while Antwain Williams rushed 46 yards on 14 attempts. Nick Williams had 3 catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.

The Cougars will play Woodland at home Friday night. Game time is 7:30.

The Colleton County JV team evened their record at 1-1 with a 14-0 win over Clear Dot Charter School. Kaden Frazier and Cam Henderson scored touchdowns for the Cougars.
