The Class of 2020 claims $12,377,634 in scholarship awards.

Despite hurdles faced over the last several months due to Covid-19, Colleton County High School held the Class of 2020 commencement ceremony Saturday June 6 at Cougar Stadium. Amid social distancing rules and limited tickets for graduates, the ceremony was the culminating event for the Class of 2020, which finished its year through virtual learning.
The Class of 2020 had 343 graduates who combined for $12,377,634 in scholarship offers, including external, institutional, Palmetto Fellow, Life and Hope Scholarships. There were 60 distinguished honor graduates with a 4.3 GPA or higher and 26 honor graduates with a cumulative GPA between 4.0-4.29.
The Class of 2020 boasted 64 National Honor Society members and 91 students earned an honor’s certificate. Additionally, there were 171 career and technology completers.
Following the processional of graduates through Cougar Field House, the presentation of colors was given by the Colleton County High School NJROTC, along with the National Anthem. Third honor graduate Sarah Aleah Ward gave the invocation.
Jasmine Leyva, salutatorian, welcomed guests and gave a well-received address highlighting social and racial inequality amid school students locally and across the country.
Senior class president Elise Walker presented the Class of 2020 gift, a free-standing swing, to CCHS principal Maurice Cannon Sr.
First honor graduate Megan DeWitt gave her valedictory address calling for unity in the world based on her faith. “My address was calling for unity based on the grounds of loving everyone, because that is what God has done for us,” said DeWitt. “We should love each other, just as God has loved us, and do all things for the glory of Him.”
Cliff Warren, associate superintendent of human resources, recognized Logan Jay Lemacks for 12 years of perfect attendance.
University of South Carolina Salkehatchie dean of students Jane Brewer conferred an associate of arts and an associate of science to graduating senior Sarah Ward. Ward earned 75 college credits and graduated with highest honors from the college — all on the same day as her high school graduation.
Presentation of the 2020 graduation candidates was given by Principal Cannon, followed by the presentation of diplomas and certificates by Cannon, John Tindal, superintendent of schools and Patricia Simmons, chairman of the Colleton County School Board, Shon Johnson, Bria Burke, and Ryan Pearson. They were assisted by the CCHS counselors and the Class of 2020 advisors.
Following the turning of the tassels, led by Elise Walker, the Class of 2020 followed tradition, tossing their flowers into the air. Following the singing of the Alma Mater, Madison Lea Strickland, student body president, led the benediction.
The Class of 2020 recessional, Pomp and Circumstance, closed the ceremony.
Head Marshalls from the Class of 2021 were Anne Mathis Thomas and Ian McLaughlin.
