The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society presented its Preservation Awards on Thursday, October 10th. The ceremony and reception were well attended at the von Lehe-Crowe House in Walterboro.
Four Awards were presented. The Colleton Rural Property Award went to Roger and Christie Beach for the beautifully restored Farmhouse known as the Beach Family Farmhouse built in 1889, with its impressive five bay wide, high hipped, red, metal roof, and sweeping double porches. The house is a beautiful example of the classic farmhouses of the 1800’s.
The Simon Verdier Award was presented to the Lemacks-Davis Garden Bungalow Jill Frey and Deb Kellner purchased the bungalow in 2016, built between 1928 and 1935 on North Lemacks Street. The house was thought to be constructed by G.C. Brown of Walterboro. The house has undergone extensive renovation and decorated with beautiful antiques and Americana.
The Griffith Home Place received The Sir John Colleton Award which represents “Architectural Preservation” at its best. The home located a half mile off the Cottageville Highway on 37 acres of property, features cross gables and balustraded front porch with Victorian turned wood posts and three matching sidelights. The house was built in the 1900’s and has been in the Griffith Family for seventy-five years.
The Walterborough Key Historic Property Award representing stewardship and maintaining the beauty of the building for the next generation to enjoy was presented to the von Lehe-Crowe House located at 919 Wichman Street. The home built around 1911 was originally built by a couple who worked for Seaboard Railroad, but the house is locally known as the Dr. Jim von Lehe House. The house is a beautiful example of Second Greek Revival architecture with towering iconic columns and its striking presence along Wichman Street. The award was presented to Michael and Samantha Crowe for the restoration of the von-Lehe Crow House.
The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Societies mission is to promote, nurture, support, and protect the historical and cultural heritage of Walterboro, Colleton County, and its environs through programs of awareness, education, and preservation.
