Blocker Boys Customs recently hosted the monthly Walterboro Cars and Coffee at their Walterboro business.

On the first Sunday of each month, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until 10:00 a.m., car enthusiasts show up at Blocker Boys to drink coffee and show off their new, old, restored and needing to be restored cars and trucks.

Vintage car owners, and those who just like to look and reminisce, travel a circuit between Hilton Head, Summerville and Charleston to talk all things cars.

The monthly event is hosted by owner, Tommie Blocker, and two of his sons, Josh and Zack, who have made a name for themselves in the automotive world.

They have been hosting the local monthly event for several years, and usually have between 20-30 vehicles participate.

“I came one time when it snowed, thinking no one would show up, but a lot of people still came,” laughed Blocker. “This is always amazing to me, because we always have people come. I think that no one will be coming today because it’s bad weather, but then suddenly a large group will drive up.”

Blocker said he has been surprised at the turn out, especially since there is no money involved, no trophies, and no real advertising. “We didn’t expect this to go over so well, but it has and I think it is because we don’t ask for anything, don’t give anything away except coffee, and don’t really expect anything. People just come for the love of cars.

“We don’t expect anyone to bring anything or donate anything. If you don’t wash your car, fine; if you bring your old beater, that’s fine, too. We also have all ages and vehicles, from new cars to rat rods, custom cars to classics. There are so many age groups, too; from younger generation to the older generation. It’s just car people talking to car people. It’s more fun because there is no competition,” says Blocker.

Coming from a construction background, Blocker purchased Blocker Boys 14 years ago and never looked back.

“When I was 15 years old, I worked for Kenneth Smoak who owned this business originally. My four sons and I have always enjoyed working on cars, so I bought him out, and after changing my specialties here a few times, we now mainly do tire work,” he said.

The next Cars and Coffee event in Walterboro will be on February 6.
