Canadys shows signs of growth

Canadys is growing.

A new Dollar General is coming to Canadys.

Located at the crossroads of Highways 61 and 15, the store plans to open by Nov. 11.

The retail store, being built by Dooley Mack Constructors of Charleston, will sell typical Dollar General name brand items that have been associated with the business for more than 80 years.

Although Canadys still has its own zip code 29433, very few people actually live around the crossroads. The store is hoping to draw business from travelers daily going to St. George and Charleston, as well as campers at Colleton State Park.

Once the home of SCE&G’s Canadys Station Power Plant (a coal-fired power plant), a post office and the railroad that serviced the power plant with coal, this small community has not seen new business in decades. But now Dollar General will be able to service the entire area.

As of May 1, the Dollar General Corporation now operates over 16,500 stores in 46 states. Over 70% of the stores are located in small towns or communities with populations of 20,000 or less.
