Helicopter, search crews find victim of deadly ATV crash

A Goose Creek man is charged in the death of a Dorchester County man who was thrown from an ATV in rural Colleton County.

The accident occurred on private property off of Parkers Ferry Road on June 18. About 3 p.m., the Colleton County 911-emergency dispatch center received reports of the crash. “The GPS signal from the cell phone indicated the caller was south of the reported location and well off the road,” said Barry McRoy, chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue.

Fire-Rescue units began to search the 12-mile-long road, while the CARE Flight helicopter searched from the air.

The victim, who is from Summerville, was found about 650 feet off of the road, down a dirt path near the Edisto River.

When rescue crews arrived, bystanders were performing CPR; however, the man was not breathing and the Colleton County Coroner’s Office was called.

According to McRoy, the victim was a passenger was a passenger in the vehicle. He was ejected when the ATV rolled over and then landed on him.

The driver was not injured. However, the driver – Lee R. McClary, 40, of Goose Creek – is charged with felony DUI resulting in a death, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye, with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

McClary was taken to the Colleton County Detention Center.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is still investigating this accident.
