Burley L. Lyons Park in Edisto Beach update

The Town of Edisto Beach is pleased to provide an update on the Burley L. Lyons Park Improvement Project—a community initiative designed to enhance park facilities and provide greater public access to Sandpiper Lake.

In 2020, the Town embarked on a park and recreational master planning process to guide future improvements to its park, signage, bike path, and beach access systems. To fund these improvements, the Town successfully applied for a Park and Recreational Development (PARD) grant from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism.

The Town, in a concerted effort to gather community input, offered various opportunities through different platforms to gather this information. As a result, two conceptual options were proposed for Burley L. Lyons Park improvements, Concept A and Concept B. The Town submitted a grant application for a less involved version of design Concept A.

Currently the project is temporarily on hold until an appeal filed by a resident claiming the project was not properly advertised by the contractor and South Carolina Department of Environmental Services is resolved.

For context, Burley L. Lyns Park was deeded to the Town in 2006 which restricts its usage for recreational purposes only. The park comprises approximately .18 acres of highland and Sandpiper Lake which covers 3.74 acres. There are more than 10 private docks on the lake, several of which, according to public records, are at or larger than 200 square feet. The Town’s proposal involves adding a boardwalk along the existing, well-worn, and utilized foot path leading to a 200 foot community dock.
