Mr. William Preston Breland, Sr., affectionately known to everyone as “Billy”, 89, of Lodge, entered into eternal rest Sunday morning, October 20, 2024, at his residence. Born October 25, 1934, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Heber Ulmer and Rosa Lee Breland Jones. He served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard for 10 years. Mr. Billy was a retired construction superintendent having worked a lifelong career in building, having worked for Arnold Construction, Boyd Construction, Mitchell Construction and Oswald Construction in North Carolina. He was a man of countless talents and abilities who was especially known for his precision, skill, and excellency in wood working. Billy was a faithful and devoted member of Bethel Methodist Church, Ruffin charge. At his beloved church, he was a Sunday School Teacher for adults and youth and worked in many different aspects of the church when they needed him. He was also a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church. He was an iconic figure and active in most every Lodge within the Third Masonic District of South Carolina and was especially sought after for his work in conferring the 2nd Fellow Craft Degree. He was s a member of Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236 – Ancient Free Masons, where he was Master of the Lodge seven times, served as Secretary for countless years, and was instrumental in the building of the current day Lodge. He later moved his membership to Hope Masonic Lodge, No. 122 – Ancient Free Masons. He also served as District Deputy for the Grand Lodge of South Carolina. Billy was a Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America Troop 632. Known as “Pop-Pop” by his family and friends, he is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Loraine Rowell Breland of Lodge; children, Richard Breland and his wife Sandra of North Carolina, Trudy Nettles and her husband Duncan of Ruffin, Angie Breland Walker of Chessie Creek, and Judy Risher and her husband Tony of Ruffin; 6 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. He leaves behind a beloved cousin, Helen Crosby. He was preceded in death by his sons, William Preston “Bill” Breland, Jr. and Lamar Breland. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to: Bethel Methodist Church, care of Jan Ulmer, 437 Spencer Drive, Ruffin, South Carolina 29475. Graveside funeral services were held 1 o’clock, Wednesday afternoon, October 23, 2024, at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, Ruffin. Arrangements By: The Brice W.
