Mr. James Barnes, 92, of Lodge, entered into eternal rest Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Prisma Health in Columbia. He was the husband of the late Betty Sue Smith Barnes.
Born May 2, 1932, in Colleton County he was a son of the late Tom Barnes and Hattie Carter Barnes. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army and retired as Assistant Fire Chief at Marine Corp Air Station in Beaufort. He was a devoted member of Hunters Chapel Baptist Church where had served as a Deacon for many years. He was a member of Hope Masonic Lodge No. 122, Omar Shrine in Mount Pleasant, Jhab Shrine Club in Varnville, Grand York Rite Body of Hampton, and the American Legion Post 108 in Hampton. Mr. Barnes dearly loved his family, his community, his friends, and his country. His kind and giving heart will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
Surviving are: many nephews and nieces including, James Allen Smoak of Walterboro, Grover Junior Barnes of Inman, W.O. Padgett of Charleston, Margaret Lyons Bunton of Walterboro, Diane Black of Columbia, Dennis Black of Columbia, Eddie Black of Oak Island, Chirs Chappel Mosley of Columbia, Keith Ralph Barnes of Spartanburg, Violet Barnes Spenser of Spartanburg, and Bruce Barnes of Spartanburg; brother-in-law, Rodney Smith of Bamberg; as well as many great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Mildred Smoak, Margie Lyons, Marie Brant, Grover Barnes, Ralph Barnes, Edwin Barnes, Ethel Barnes, Annie Goodwin, and Mary Ellen Padgett; and nieces and nephews, Royce Padgett, Joey Lyons, Vicki Lyons Sanders, John Chappell, and Barbara Smoak Cooke.
Funeral services will be held 3 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, October 6, 2024, at Hunters Chapel Baptist Church, 9423 Hunters Chapel Road, Bamberg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2 pm in the church sanctuary.
