Back to School: Internet access

Posted

The SC Office of Regulatory Staff (ORS) is offering free internet service through December 2020 to qualifying households. This free service is being provided to support families impacted by COVID-19 that need internet access to support virtual learning opportunities for their student(s).

ORS has approved eligible households with students attending Colleton County School District to receive wired monthly internet service as opposed to a mobile hotspot, to provide our students with fast, reliable broadband services.

The ORS free monthly internet service is limited to educational purposes only. The service may not be utilized for gaming, streaming music, movies or other non-educational purposes.

Only devices issued by Colleton County School District will be allowed to connect to the internet and content will be filtered and limited to educational sites.

If you are not interested in receiving a limited internet service package, inquire at PRTC or another provider of your choosing about available internet packages and current specials they may have.

Please keep in mind that the cost of any alternative service package will not be covered through the program provided by the ORS or by Colleton County School District.

The law limits the households eligible for free internet to households meeting all of the following requirements:

• Households with a student (enrolled in Colleton County School District); and

• Households with an income at or below 250 percent of federal poverty (see chart); and

• Internet service that is not duplicative (the household has no internet service); and

• Internet is needed because of the pandemic and for educational purposes.

• Only one monthly internet service per qualifying student household.

If you meet these requirements to be eligible for the ORS free monthly internet service/ hotspot program, and did not receive a letter from the school district by Tuesday Aug. 25, call the WiFi Hotline at 843-782-0032, or email wifi@colleton.k12.sc.us.
