Brice Herndon, Funeral Chapels and Crematory

Mrs. Audrey Nugent Murray, age 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family at her home on the Ashepoo River in Walterboro while under the care of Amedisys Hospice.

Born March 11, 1946, in New York City, New York she was a daughter of the late Fred and Bertha Nugent.   Audrey was reared on Riverside Drive in Harlem, New York before moving to Florida and then making the Lowcountry of South Carolina her home in the early 1970’s.  She was a true entrepreneur and was always ready to jump at any opportunity that involved making a dollar.  Her first enterprise was cosmetology, having operated her first beauty salon, “O-Hair” on Main Street in Walterboro.    Her love for real-estate became a reality when she opened Baldwin Preferred Properties which eventually transitioned into its current day, Preferred Properties.   Her last, and one of her most beloved, was that of tax preparing, having begun across from the Walterboro Courthouse with H and R Block and then opening A and A Tax Services on Jefferies Boulevard in Walterboro.   She was a licensed Insurance Agent, handling all forms of insurance to include Health, Automobile, and Casualty.

A great passion and a large part of Audrey’s life and heart was with the Guardian ad Litem program. She whole heartily gave to countless young children and foreign exchange students her love and the opportunity that many would have otherwise never known.  Many of these folks still held close relationships with Audrey until this day.

She was raised as a Roman Catholic, rearing her children in the devout faith of the Catholic church and eventually joined the Episcopal Church and moved her membership to Saint Jude’s Church in Walterboro.   She was a member of Toastmasters and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks – Walterboro Lodge No. 1988.  Throughout the years, she and her husband supported countless organizations both professionally and civically, holding memberships and sponsorships in many local and national organizations.

One of Audrey’s greatest pastimes was shopping. She was known by many as a “Professional Shopper”.   She enjoyed travel and going places, especially cruises and being on the family’s boat.   Her grandchildren were her life, and she was always their greatest supporter.

Surviving are: her husband of forty-two years, Mr. Thomas Henry “Scooter” Murray, III; four children, John Richard Murray, Shawn Todd “Shawny” Murray and his wife Meagan, Thomas Henry Murray, IV and his wife Heather, and Stacie Murray Clark and her husband Jeff; one she loved as a daughter, Pam Porter; four brothers, Johnny Nugent, Joe Nugent, George Nugent, Daniel Nugent; and three sisters, Christian N. Leary, Annette Pulis, and Louise Johnson. There are nine grandchildren, Ashten (Cody), Lexie, Jillian, Ava, Kinslee, Hannah, Karsyn, Thomas, Alex, and Briana; and two great grandchildren, Annalee and Paige; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to the following: Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospitals,  262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105; or to, Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon, February 16, 2020, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.   The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony until 6 o’clock that evening at the funeral home.
