Mr. Atward Eugene Cone, known by all as “Gene”, 81, of Lexington, South Carolina died Saturday October 23 at Lexington Medical Center.
Gene was born August 23, 1940, in Colleton County, and was the son of the late Atwood Jerome Cone and Iris Helena Bishop Cullison. He graduated from Carlisle Military School in 1958 and attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and Augusta College. In 1961 he joined the United States Army, where he served in the Artillery and was a marksman with the M-14 Rifle. Gene married the love of his life Joyce Seigler in October 1961 before he was deployed to Germany until 1963. He began his career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1967 as a mechanic and worked his way to Planner-Estimator until he retired in 1993.
Gene had many talents which everyone relied upon when needed. He built the family home on Chamblee Road, vacation home on Edisto River and, most recently, the Lodge High School Memorial Gazebo. He served as Coordinator for the Lodge-Bells High School Reunion for two years and has remained a devoted Alumni of Carlisle Military School, which is now Camden Military School. On Saturdays you would always find him in front of the TV cheering, or screaming, on the Clemson football team.
Gene is survived by his ex-wife, Joyce S. Cone of Round 0; a son, Trent Cone of Round O; a daughter, Shannan Woovis (Georgie) of Lexington, daughter, Erin Womack (Andy) of Beaufort; eight grandchildren, Riley Woovis (Rachel) of North Dakota, Hannah Woovis of Texas, Caleigh Woovis of Lexington, Zach Womack of North Carolina, Clay Womack of Charleston, Emily and Carter Womack of Beaufort and Lindsey Cone of Walterboro; and two great-grandchildren, Lainey Paul and ZJ Womack and his four-legged companion Berkeley.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stacey Deanne Cone, his brother, William Franklin Cone and his parents.
Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, October 27, 2021 at 3:00 in the Carter’s Ford Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following: Camden Military Academy, 520 Highway 1 North, Camden, SC 29020
