Labor Day had barely begun when local firefighters and paramedics were called to a rural road in Colleton County when a 911-emergency caller said that an ATV flipped over and onto two people.

Shortly after midnight on Monday, Sept. 5th, emergency crews with Colleton County Fire-Rescue were called to Sunrise Road, otherwise known as S.C. Highway 217.

Originally, a 911-emergency caller said that two people were injured when an ATV (four-wheeler) overturned on the dirt road and then landed on them.

When firefighters and paramedics arrived to the scene, they found a woman on the side of the dirt road, about 1.5-miles from the entrance of Sunrise Road.

The woman had a “significant head injury,” according to information provided by Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.

McRoy said two Colleton County Fire-Rescue ambulances responded to the scene. He and his response teams also requested a medical helicopter, because of the seriousness of the woman’s head trauma.

The Meducare medical helicopter landed at the nearby Circle C Truck Stop, near Cannadys. An ambulance transported the woman from the crash site to the landing zone. From there, the unidentified woman was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in Nroth Charleston.

The second victim on the ATV was a man. He denied needing any medical treatment, said McRoy. Therefore, he was not transported to a hospital for evaluation.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating this motor-vehicle-crash. It is unclear if the woman was wearing a helmet when the crash occurred.
