State and local authorities are investigating a fire that was purposefully set to a Colleton County social club on the morning of October 12th.

Firefighter-paramedics were called to the scene at about 10:53 a.m. when 911-emergency callers notified authorities of the fire, which was first spotted in an apartment connected to the Classic Social Club.

“Arriving units found smoke coming from the building, but the fire had burned itself out,” said Barry McRoy, director of Colleton County Fire-Rescue. “The fire damaged several rooms in the building, but once the accelerant used was consumed, the fire did not extend into the building,” he said. “The fire was obviously set and may have been started during the night.”

The Arson Team with the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called to the scene. According to McRoy, investigators worked “through the day” collecting evidence and investigating the fire.

As of press deadline, SLED had not responded with updates to this active investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the fire is encouraged to contact the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at (843) 549-2211, the SLED Arson Hotline at 1-800-922-7766 or Colleton County Fire-Rescue Headquarters at (843) 539-1960.
