A 21-year-old Colleton County man is charged in connection with the death of another man, who reportedly was shot while the two tried to steal catalytic converters.

Hunter Plummer, 21, is charged with contributing to the death of Allen Peters, 28, of Ruffin.

Plummer and the victim were allegedly trying to steal catalytic converters on June 27 from a house on Deliverance Lane in Colleton County when the incident occurred. According to Colleton County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Shalane Lowes, deputies were called to a residence on Field Creek Lane around 5 a.m. on June 27 after a report of a man who had been dropped off at his house and was not breathing.

“Deputies located the man inside the residence, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds,” said Lowes.

This is an ongoing investigation and more details are not available, according to Lowes.

According to Lowes, Plummer is charged under a new state statute that is related to property being damaged during the theft of non-ferrous metals resulting in a death.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at 843-549-2211.
