A Saturday afternoon shooting led to a car crash in Walterboro along Interstate 95, leaving two men seriously injured.
According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the incident occurred at about 5:17 a.m. on May 22nd at the southbound rest area near mile marker 45 on I-95.
When fire-rescue personnel and law enforcement officers arrived on scene, they found one man at the rest area with non-life-threatening injuries, said McRoy. This man was treated at the scene by local firefighter-paramedics and then transported to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
The second man was also found at the scene: this victim had been shot several times, said McRoy, and was in critical condition.

“Deputies located a vehicle, deep in the wooded median near the 46-mile marker, south of the rest area,” said McRoy. “The vehicle appeared to have left the Interstate at a high rate of speed and struck a tree, causing heavy damage.”
The vehicle had also been shot at several times, with the male driver inside that vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. The CARE Flight medical helicopter was called to the scene.
The helicopter landed in the parking lot of the rest area, and the shooting victim was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.
Both the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and the S.C. Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
As of press deadline, there were no motives for the shooting, and no suspects have been charged.
According to Colleton County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Shalane Lowes, this shooting incident is believed to be an isolated incident. “Due to this being an active investigation, additional information regarding this case is limited at this time,” said Lowes.
