The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and Colleton County Fire Rescue responded to a report of an accident on Benton Farm Road near Rentz Drive. The accident was reported just after midnight on May 24th. The Sheriff’s Deputy arrived shortly after the report to find the vehicle fully involved. Upon arrival Colleton County Fire-Rescue found the small car with heavy front-end damage, where it had struck a large pine tree. The wreck sparked an approximately 1/4-acre woods fire was also burning around the car. Firefighter-Paramedics extinguished the fire and located the body of a female in the front seat of the car. The Coroner’s Office investigated the scene and allowed Fire-Rescue to remove the passenger side door to gain access to the driver. She was transported by the Coroner’s Office. It appeared the northbound car had just cleared a curve, when it dropped off the shoulder and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to lose control. The vehicle crossed into the ditch on the southbound side of the road, entered the woods and struck the large pine tree. The accident is being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol.
