Two arrested in stolen car
Eric Jeremiah Smalls, 20, and Victoria Lynn Pontiera, 20, were arrested on Jan. 23 near Walmart.
An anonymous caller to 9-1-1 said they were following a vehicle stolen in Greenwood on Bells Highway near Islandton; however, the caller lost track of the car as it traveled toward Walterboro.
A deputy on Bells Highway near Walmart spotted and stopped the car after confirming the car had been reported stolen with the Greenwood Police Department. Greenwood police reportedly said the two were also wanted for armed robbery.
Smalls allegedly told the deputy he went to Greenwood from Walterboro with the promise of residency and employment; however, neither promise materialized. During that time, Pontiera apparently broke up with her boyfriend and she and Smalls began dating. The deputy reported that Smalls admitted to fighting with the boyfriend, putting the man in the hospital, and stealing his vehicle by force.
Pontiera reportedly told the deputy that on Jan. 22, she and her ex-boyfriend were involved in an incident and she was assaulted by him. After she told Smalls what occurred, they allegedly designed a plan to “set him up.” She told the deputy she picked up a brick, intending to hit her ex-boyfriend in the head, but decided not to. She and Smalls then took the vehicle and came to Walterboro.
The white Ford Explorer was impounded.
