The Colleton County Cougar Football team was eliminated in the opening round of the SCHSL AAAA Playoffs following a 20-14 loss to Airport High School Friday Nov. 8 on the road. In a close match-up, Colleton County accrued 242 total yards versus 273 total yards for Airport. Both teams had a number of penalties, with the Cougars being charged with 12 for 45 yards and the Eagles, 10 for 73 yards.

The Eagles scored with 5:25 left in the third quarter on a 14-yard touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. Colleton County then put together a scoring series to tie the game 14-14 with 8:01 remaining. On the next series, Airport scored on a 71-yard kickoff return (kick, failed) to take the final lead of the game.
Quarterback Edwardian Stansel was 5-11 in passing for 50 yards. Trakell Murray had 34 carries for 173 yards and scored a touchdown. He was also 1-1 in passing for 23 yards with a touchdown. Jeremiah Mosley had 46 yards receiving and scored one touchdown.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Coach Coby Peeler. “I thought our guys played really hard and with a lot of passion. This group has gotten better as the season wore on and that is a credit to our seniors. I hate, as you do, to see it end for all the seniors. We have some guys in that class who have made a lot of plays for us over the past few years.
“I think, looking forward, they have helped establish something, an identity of toughness and commitment — and, that is something we can build on,” said Peeler. “We have some big shoes to fill, but I’m excited about the future of Cougar Football.”
Colleton County finished the 2019 season 3-7 overall and 1-2 in Region VII-AAAA.
