A Cottageville man has been arrested on two counts of attempted murder in a continuing dispute over ownership of land on Burr Hill Road.
Sheldon Leonard Rhodes, 48, of 183 Sherman Lane in Cottageville was arrested on the felony charges on Nov. 9, two days after the incident.
According to the incident report, two males and a female arrived at a cemetery Nov. 7 at approximately 3 p.m. to clear a gravesite for a Nov. 9 funeral.
The two men exited their vehicle while the female remained inside.
According to the incident report, Rhodes arrived at the cemetery and confronted the two men, telling them to leave his property.
The two male victims allege that Rhodes pulled a handgun and fired at them; the female witness confirmed their account.
Rhodes told deputies that one of the men allegedly pulled a handgun on him and produced a camera that reportedly showed one of the two victims holding a silver pistol.
Colleton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Shane Roberts said Rhodes has been claiming ownership of the land that contains the cemetery for years.
