The Lowcountry Renegades finished runner-up in the Silver Division of the USSSA South Carolina Open State Championships at the ACE Basin Sports Complex this past weekend. They would go 2-and-2 on the weekend, following a number one seed at the end of day one.
Against the Summerville Sharks in game one, the Renegades earned a 15-12 win after trailing most of the game. Down by three runs heading into their final at-bat, the Renegades put six runs on the board to earn the come-from-behind win.
In the second game, the Renegades played closely against the East Coast Bombers for most of the game. However, a late-in-the-game grand slam proved costly for the Renegades and led to an eventual 10-3 loss.
On Sunday, they re-matched against the Sharks. Trailing by one run heading into their final at-bat, the Renegades managed to get runners in scoring position before a Mason Jolly two-run walk-off single earned them the win. “We played the Sharks similarly both games this weekend, coming from behind twice for the win,” said Coach Frankie Kellam. “Mason came through for us big in the second game to put us in the championship.”
In the Silver Championship game, the Renegades faced the Bluffton Thunder and took a 4-1 loss.
“We played the Thunder close and had chances to score some runs, but couldn’t make it happen,” said Kellam. “We still need to get better defensively because we are giving up way too many runs. But, overall, I am very proud of their effort over the entire weekend.”
The roster for the weekend included Carter Smoak, John Tomedolskey, Mason Jolly, Chance Palmer, Jackson Bell, Jacob Breland, Thomas Kellam, Johnathan Schaffer, Pete Peters, Ben Kennedy, Connor Morris and Jordan Crosby. Kellam is assisted by Jon Schaffer, Mark Tomedolskey and John Jolly.
