Three local residents — Packy Burke and Heather and Richard Massey — laced up their cleats (or rather their running shoes) and headed to “The Joe” for the 13th annual RiverDogs “Run Forrest Run 5K” held Saturday May 21. The race, presented by Fleet Feet Sports, began in front of the baseball stadium and finished at home plate, where runners were greeted by RiverDog players and Charlie T. RiverDog.
In a field of nearly 700 runners, Burke (21.12.1) and R. Massey (20.49.6) finished first in their respective age divisions, while H. Massey (28.41.1) finished sixth.
Burke, 37, and R. Massey, 40, are in separate age divisions this year, but they still see their main competition as each other. “Richard and I are competitive in nature,” said Burke. “We share a mutual love for running, wrestling and basically, anything athletic. We push each other during races, each trying to outpace the other.”
Along with coaching the Colleton County High School Wrestling team together, Massey and Burke also run the Walterboro Takedown Club, a youth wrestling group for ages 4-14.
