The Lady War Hawks split a pair of games last week in their final regular season appearances before heading into the SCISA State Tournament in Sumter.
Against Thomas Heyward, Colleton Prep took a 4-0 loss on the road. Patricia Utsey recorded the only Lady Hawk hit in the game. Haley Wilson took the loss for Colleton Prep in the circle.
“We held them to one run until the bottom of the sixth,” said Coach Mallory Crawford. “They strung a few hits together to get some runs across the plate. We put the ball in play very well, but their outfield made three exceptional catches — which had they fallen, would have made the game a lot more interesting. We played very sound defense and Haley pitched an amazing game. They have four players committed to play in college and the fact that our defense improved and stepped up against a team of their caliber is a win in my book. That’s what we’ve really been working hard at improving.”
Thursday May 5 was Senior Night for the Lady Hawks and they wasted no time in earning a 9-3 victory over Northwoods Academy. Senior Ally Knight earned the win in the circle in her final regular season appearance for Colleton Prep, allowing just two hits.
Senior Lexie Murray went 3-for-4 at the plate for Colleton Prep. Also contributing for the Lady Hawks were Wilson and Mollie Warren, who both went 2-for-3 in the game.
“Again, our defense was on point,” said Crawford. “We really did a good job of getting lead runners out and taking care of the ball. This is exactly where I hoped we’d be heading into the state tournament. I couldn’t be happier with the way the girls played this past week. I am looking forward to a few solid, hard practices in preparation of the upcoming tournament.”
The Lady Hawks clenched the Region III-A Championship, finishing their season 16-8 overall and 10-2 in region competition. They will travel to Sumter to begin play on Friday and Saturday May 13-14 in the SCISA State Tournament. Colleton Prep will be looking to bring back a state title, after earning back-to-back titles in 2013-2014 and finishing runner-up to Clarendon Hall last season.
