One killed in rash of weekend shootings | News | The Press and Standard

On Monday April 18 at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers from the Walterboro Police Department responded to 126 Lewis Street, in reference to a shooting that left one man dead. When officers arrived they met with the surviving victim, who stated that she and her boyfriend were asleep in their bed when they heard loud knocking on their door, followed by the door being shot several times. Finally, an unknown suspect kicked the door in.

The victim stated that several unknown suspects entered the residence and gunfire was exchanged between her boyfriend and the suspects. She said that one of the suspects yelled he was hit, and they all ran from the residence. The victim stated that her boyfriend was shot several times. Colleton County Fire Rescue and the Colleton County Coroner’s office responded to the scene where the he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Ramone Varner, 23, of 126 Lewis St., according to Colleton County Coroner Rich Harvey, who listed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Three other shooting incidents were reported over the weekd:

  • On Friday April 15 at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers from the Walterboro Police Department responded to 525 Sweat Street in reference to shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who stated that while she was watching television she heard the sound of gunfire outside her residence. Officers on scene found several shell casings on the ground, as well as several bullet holes in the victim’s home. Several windows and doors were damaged during the incident. The victim stated that she did not know anyone who may want to harm her.
  • On Saturday April 16 at approximately 5:30 p.m., officers from the Walterboro Police Department responded to headquarters and met with a complainant who stated that her vehicle was struck by gunfire while she was at Lincoln Apartments at 404 Witsell Street. The complainant stated that she was not inside the vehicle at the time of the incident and was unsure of any additional information.
  • At approximately 7:13 p.m. Saturday, officers received a call in reference to shots fired in the area of 300 Lockhart Street. Officers were advised prior to their arrival that several black males were seen fleeing the area on foot. Once officers arrived on scene, they observed several shell casings and made contact with a victim who stated that he was standing in the yard at 300 Lockhart Street when several unknown males began shooting into the crowd. The victim stated as he was fleeing, he was struck in the left foot by a bullet. The victim was transported by personal vehicle to Colleton Medical Center and treated for his injuries. Investigators from the Walterboro Police Department responded to the scene and have been processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses.

At this time, investigators have not been able to confirm the motive behind any of the shootings. Investigators are actively investigating any potential correlation between each of the shootings.

Each incident is still under investigation. Additional information will be released at a later time.
