Forest Hills Elementary Safety Patrol donates to Safe Haven Homeless Shelter

In a world often filled with uncertainties and challenges, there’s an undeniable power in giving, said Executive Director Tara Glover for Lowcountry Community Action Agency, Inc. Donating to a homeless shelter goes far beyond simply providing necessities -  it is an opportunity to restore hope, dignity and a sense of belonging to those who need it most.

Ms. Candace Edwards, Shelter Coordinator, had a heartwarming meeting with the Assistant Principal, Ms. Florrie Edwards of Forest Hills Elementary School, and the students who make up the school’s Safety Patrol Team on Tuesday, April 15, 2024. This group of students, through their selfless act of collecting clothing items, toiletries, and cleaning supplies for the shelter clients, made a profound impact on the journey towards brighter days. Their donations have the power to change lives and bring hope to those in need.

Ms. Edwards shared with the children that their support allows Safe Haven Homeless Shelter to offer more than just meals and shelter. It enables us to provide a comprehensive solution to address the root causes of homelessness. We equip individuals with the tools they need to rebuild their lives through education, training, recovery programs, and support. This comprehensive approach instills hope and optimism in those we serve, showing them that a brighter future is possible, said Ms. Edwards. To show her appreciation for the donations received, Ms. Edwards provided the group with a pizza party and personal gift bags.

Mrs. Glover emphasized that Lowcountry CAA is dedicated to changing people’s lives and creating a positive impact in the community. However, the community’s support is not just important, it is crucial to our success and the success of the individuals we serve. The community’s donations create hope, leading to lasting transformations and renewed independence for those we serve. Your support is not just a donation; it is a lifeline for those in need. Together, we can empower individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve meaningful change, said Mrs. Glover.

Mrs. Glover emphasized, “Your contribution matters, and there are multiple ways you can help us make a lasting impact on the lives of the less fortunate.”

Donate Financially: Your financial support paves the way for real change in the lives of the homeless individuals and families we serve. Whether providing a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, or vital training, your generosity empowers us to offer comprehensive solutions for lasting transformation. Donations can be made by mail to our mailing address at Post Office Box 1726, Walterboro, SC 29488, or in person at 1605 Jefferies Hwy., Walterboro, SC. To make a secure online donation, visit our agency’s website, or join our list of donors and donate monthly to provide a sustaining and consistent income for our Mission.

Donate Goods: Your excess items can become life-changing resources for those in need. We accept many items, including clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods, books, etc. These donations directly contribute to our efforts to restore hope and independence. Also, we recycle any items we cannot use in our shelter or with our clientele, so nothing you donate goes to waste.

Donate Time: Volunteering at Safe Haven Homeless Shelter is the most rewarding thing you can do when you have free time, and it’s a rewarding experience. Our shelter is often understaffed because we rely primarily on funding from donations and government grants to employ staff. Because Safe Haven currently does not receive any government funding, we need your help with preparing and serving meals, help with fundraising, assistance in office work, and volunteer hours to keep the shelter open 24 hours a day. Homeless individuals rely on Safe Haven Homeless Shelter because we provide relief from the heat, rain, and cold weather. Volunteering your time will make a huge difference in the lives of the homeless.
