On April 3, 2024 an unidentified man riding a bicycle was killed after being hit from behind by a vehicle that fled the scene. The victim was identified as Charles Folk, 77 years of age from Lodge. Mr. Lodge and the vehicle were both traveling west on Bells Highway when the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. The South Carolina Highway Patrol determined that the vehicle that struck Mr. Folk was a 2014-2020 Nissan Rouge. The color of the vehicle was thought to be a dark brown and troopers advised the Rogue would have damage in the right area and passenger side mirror.
Subsequently, Jessica Dawn Simpson of Walterboro, age 34, was arrested Friday, April 12 and charged with hit and run involving death and was booked at the Colleton County Detention Center pending a bond hearing. Her next court appearance after the bond hearing is June 7.
