DAR Awards Scholarships

Daughters of the American Revolution awarded two scholarships at its March meeting to Christian Singleton and Olivia Grace Sumner.

Christian is a Senior at Colleton County High School where he is on the varsity track and field team and the member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the Sigma Beta Chapter of the Iota Theta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. In addition, he is the Manager of the JV Girls’ Basketball team, a Salkehatchie Panelist, Mentor to the Colleton County Middle School Football Team, and a member of the Oakman Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

Olivia Sumner is the daughter of Heather and Thomas Sumner and a Dual Enrollment Student with Colleton Prep Academy and University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. She is a member of the National Honor Society and currently its President. Among her many activities she is Student Body President, Varsity Cheerleading Captain, a member of the Spanish Club, the County Representative of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Youth Summit. In the community Olivia has also been a Colleton County Rice Planter, a First Baptist Church Youth Choir Volunteer, and a Colleton Prep PTO Volunteer.

According to the DAR website, DAR has 120 years of tradition, more than one million members admitted since its founding, a vast array of service work, a historic National Headquarters building with extraordinary collections, and countless activities taking place locally, nationally and globally, there is much to learn about the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The organization was founded in 1890 with the simple mission of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. These timeless, overarching principles keep the DAR strong and vitally relevant in this ever-changing world.

This nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future. Through better education consists of over 190,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the world. These vibrant, active women are the heart of the organization.
