There is a special song, “Mother’s Prayers Have Followed Me” by Lizzie DeArmond (author) and Bentley D. Ackley (composer), that we sang in my church annually for Mother’s Day when I was a young girl. I loved the beautiful tune of it so much, but I did not realize what the lyrics meant until much later.
The words of this meaningful Mother’s Day song are a reflection of the following two verses of Scripture: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people” (I Timothy 2:1 ESV) and “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (II Timothy 1:5 ESV).
The lyrics of this song show just how a mother who truly knows the Lord will always pray for her children, no matter what the situation. The child in the song “ran away” from his foundation and lived far from God. One day he realized that it was his mother’s prayers that got him through his wretched life, and he finally turned back to a life in Christ. He gave his mother the credit she was due for believing in him and praying that he would one day “wake up and smell the coffee.”
A Christian mother knows her children are a blessing from the Lord, so when she needs guidance in dealing with or praying for them, it is only to God that she must turn. Even if her children may go astray, they will one day return to that foundation that she and the Lord laid for them, and they will recognize that it was their mother’s prayers that carried them. However, children must learn that they cannot always just depend on Momma’s prayers, because she is not going to be around forever. They must learn how to pray for themselves.
There are all kinds of power in this world: financial power, political power, manpower, leadership power, social power and so on. But none can ever beat the power of a praying mother. Throughout my life as a mother, there are numerous times that our children have called and asked me to pray for something specific for them. Children who are raised in a Christian home know the value and strength of a mother’s prayers.
A loving, Christian mother will pray for her children until the day she leaves this world. Sometimes children are so busy enjoying themselves that they don’t think about praying for themselves, so we stand in the gap for them.
Please take the time to meditate on and share the lyrics of this beautiful song, “Mother’s Prayers Have Followed Me.”
I grieved my Lord from day to day,
I scorned His love so full and free,
And though I wandered far away,
My mother’s prayers have followed me.
I’m coming home, I’m coming home,
To live my wasted life anew,
For mother’s prayers have followed me,
Have followed me the whole world through.
O’er desert wild, o’er mountain high,
A wanderer I chose to be;
A wretched soul, condemned to die,
Still mother’s prayers have followed me.
He turned my darkness into light,
This blessed Christ of Calvary!
I’ll praise His name both day and night,
That mother’s prayers have followed me.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and mothers-to-be!
Have a wonderfully blessed week, and never leave home without Him!
