The 143rd annual commemoration of Confederate Memorial Day will be held Friday May 10 at the memorial grounds at Rivers Bridge State Historic Site near Ehrhardt.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. and a prelude of period music by Dr. Jim Dreyfuss, followed by commemorative activities to the memory of Confederate soldiers who fought and died at the Battle of Rivers Bridge in February 1865. A memorial speech will be given by Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell.
The patriotic program will be followed by a solemn ceremony of wreaths being placed on the graves of the Civil War soldiers and other military veterans buried in the memorial grounds. The program will conclude with a rifle and cannon salute from uniformed Confederate re-enactors.
After the ceremonies, a barbecue dinner by B&D Barbecue will be available for purchase. The S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum will have an exhibit in the Rivers Bridge community building.
