The Colleton County Cougars fell to a 0-3 start on the season following a 41-14 trouncing by the Region 6-AAAAA Carolina Forest Panthers (2-0) in Myrtle Beach Friday night. The Cougars had 98 total yards and recorded just seven first downs, along with two turnovers and six penalties in the game.
Carolina Forest scored first on a 10-yard run, then added two more in the second quarter on a 47-yard touchdown pass and a 9-yard run for a 20-0 lead. The Cougars went on the board before the half when Shykem Chisolm scored on a 10-yard pass from Edwardian Stansil (Calcutt, kick). The Panthers scored once in the third before Colleton County’s Trakell Murray went in the end zone on a 1-yard run (Calcutt, kick) to make it 27-14. Carolina Forest scored twice more in the fourth quarter to put the game well out of reach for the Cougars.
“We are continuing to improve in a lot of areas, but we absolutely have to eliminate miscues,” said Coach Coby Peeler.
“Edwardian Stansil threw the ball well, and continues to try and lead, but way too many penalties just nullified the few good drives we had.”
“Defensively, I’m disappointed,” said Peeler. “I thought, for the first time, there was a lack of effort at times. It wasn’t everyone, or ongoing, but I saw it. We’ll go back to work on Monday and try to simplify some things to clean it up.”
The Cougars will be home for the first time this season against non-region opponent Orangeburg Wilkinson (2-1) Friday evening.
Colleton County will be hosting “Rec Ball and Student Night” during which middle school and high school students will be admitted for $5 with their student ID. Colleton County All-Star players and cheerleaders wearing a current jersey will also be admitted free along with their coaches.
Fans who purchased tickets for the rained-out Lakewood game on Aug. 17 will be admitted free of charge with a valid ticket stub. Those with valid stubs should enter through the Pass Gate at the stadium.
