The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office found Jelani R. Aiken walking along Hendersonville Highway the evening of Aug. 2, a few hours after investigators announced that they were seeking him in connection with a murder earlier in the day.
Aiken, 43, of Walterboro, was taken into custody on the murder charge at 9:34 p.m. and transported to the Colleton County Detention Center.
Aiken is being held without bond. According to state law, a circuit court judge is the only one who can set bond on a murder charge.
Aiken is charged with killing Daniel Chickering, 29, of Round O on the morning of Aug 2.
Colleton County Chief Deputy Coroner Richard Carter said that Chickering, pronounced dead at the scene, died of blunt force trauma to the head. Deputy Coroners Wayne Walker and Chris Horsley assisted Carter in the death investigation.
Chickering’s body was found on the floor in a rear room at Discount Auto Depot, an apparently closed auto repair shop at 87 Acorn Rd., which intersects the 1100 block of Sniders Highway.
Members of the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area Aug. 2 at 10:27 a.m. to interview a witness waiting at a service station on Sniders Highway who wanted to report a civil complaint regarding an acquaintance.
The deputy and witness went to the business, and the deputy discovered the body.
Another call into the dispatch center Aug. 2 at 10:59 a.m. reported a subject fleeing the area on foot.
Additional deputies arrived at the building and the sheriff office’s Criminal Investigation Unit was called to the scene.
The investigation led detectives to seek a murder charge against Aiken and on Aug. 2 at approximately 7:20 p.m., the sheriff’s office asked for the public’s assistance in locating the suspect.
The sheriff office’s Public Information Officer Lt. Tyger Benton said no additional information will be available while the investigation continues.
Anyone with any information reference to this case are asked to contact the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at 843-549-2211 or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111 or 1-888-Crime-SC. Callers can remain anonymous.
