The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into an Aug. 5 shooting death.
The call alerting safety forces to the shooting came into the dispatch center at approximately 12:30 a.m., sending members of the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and Colleton County Fire-Rescue to a residence at 365 Ford Ln., just off Ritter Road.
Deputies arriving on the scene found the body of a deceased adult male.
A Colleton County Fire-Rescue battalion chief and ambulance also responded to the scene. The battalion chief, assessing the condition of Ford Lane, found the road to be extremely wet and bumpy. He then had the ambulance stationed on Ritter Road and made his way to the scene of the shooting.
The battalion chief, also a paramedic, examined the victim and determined he was not breathing and did not have a pulse. He passed on the information to the Colleton County Coroner’s Office.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey reported that Benjamin Hampleton, 41, of Green Pond died of multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy was to be performed to formally determine the cause of death.
Hampleton’s body was located in the front yard of the residence.
A second gunshot victim was reportedly taken to the Colleton Medical Center’s Emergency Department by private vehicle and was treated for non-life threatening wounds to his neck and arm.
Sheriff Office Public Information Officer Tony Jones said, “No further information will be available at this time, as this is early in the investigation.”
